I don't think the US dealers do anything to the bike other than final assembly (handlebars, front wheel, etc...). I know for a fact that the Savage comes crated, assembled, and that the dealer assembly checklist doesn't even include checking the oil level!!! (several of us got our bike overfilled.....!) Of course, US specific mods are probablly done in Japan during assembly, which probably eliminates some customs hassles. I'd guess that your suspicion is right on; try the richer settings from the manual. BTW, my dealer's mechs have warned that doing anything to the bike will void the warranty (I think I'm allowed to ride it ;^)), but we've heard on the forum about other mechs that are more liberal. Just be careful, and make sure you can make it look original if it needs warranty work!
